Remember: It is extremely important (if you use makeup) to wear a water-based natural mineral makeup. Water-based natural mineral makeup (such as Jane Iredale Makeup) allows your skin to breathe and doesn't clog your pores which helps heal your existing breakouts and prevents further skin problems. To prevent acne irritation be sure to research the ingredients of the makeup you're using to ensure the mineral content is of sufficient amount. A very small amount of mineral content allows manufactuers to advertise and claim makeup as mineral-based.

Jane Iredale Makeup is 100% water-based mineral makeup.

ACNE

Laser Derm in Red Deer offers a multi-therapeutic approach for the treatment of ACNE.

ACNE can be an embarrassing condition that leaves many sufferers feeling self-conscious and at times socially withdrawn. This is especially true for teenagers where the problem is magnified as a result of teen angst among their peers. Insurance companies have recognized the difficulties ACNE presents in a beauty/fashion conscious society. Some costs of the treatments are covered giving more and more individuals the opportunity to seek medical treatment.

ACNE treatments have evolved over time with many types of treatment available depending on the type of ACNE (comidonal, pustular, cystic and mixed) being treated and the skin type of the patient. In the past, oral antibiotics and topical prescription mixes (creams and lotions) were the most effective medical treatments available to the physician, with a success rate of approximately 40 – 50%. Today there are a variety of combination therapeutic treatments used with traditional medicine including: microdermabrasion, chemical peels, photo dynamic and IPL (light) therapy, electronic heat devices and a variety of skin care products. The success rate for moderate to severe acne will depend on the dermatological management of acne, therefore, you should look for a doctor who is interested, experienced and up to date with the latest and most effective treatments available for each individual case. In some cases, the treatment of acne is covered by third party insurance.

ABOUT ACNE

ACNE is a common skin condition in which the pores of the skin become clogged with debris made up of dead skin cells and sebum (oil). Bacteria acting on this debris cause irritation and inflammation, resulting in a blackhead, whitehead, pimple or nodule. While it is thought that hormones play a role in the cause of ACNE, the other factors that promote blockage of pores include bacteria, cosmetics, oil, and detergents. ACNE treatments are designed to specifically modify and control these factors which can vary from patient to patient.

Types of Acne Treatment

Accutane
Accutane is a powerful drug (chemically related to vitamin A) that is prescribed to treat severe acne. It was used almost exclusively years ago and does have a success rate of approximately 80% plus for most patients who notice a marked improvement after one or two courses. Most frequently, the first signs of healing occur after two to three weeks of treatment, although, it may take as long as one or two months before beneficial effects are seen. Often, redness and itching of the affected skin are common initial effects which disappear with continuous dosages. Because the side effects of this strong skin medication are numerous and in some cases dangerous, it is important to follow the instructions closely provided by your physician. Accutane can be beneficial for some patients, although it is most often used in conjunction with other treatments for best results when treating severe acne.

Photorejuvenation
Photorejuvenation is now the gold standard for non-ablative skin treatments. The most recent advances - Photo dynamic Therapy combined with I.P.L. (Intense Pulsed Light) – known as Photo dynamic Skin Rejuvenation. Photo dynamic Skin Rejuvenation involves the application of Levulan (a natural photosensitizing agent), which is then activated with a light laser or Blu-U light. This results in significant improvement in moderate to severe cystic acne. Additionally it will improve skin texture, pore size and pigmentation.

Levulan Photodynamic Therapy for Acne - unclogs pores and shuts down sebaceous gland (the root cause of the formation of acne). Resistant and Cystic Acne frequently fail to respond to typical measures of control. Levulan Photodynamic Therapy can bring relief by minimizing acne and prevent scarring that otherwise may occur. There is (as seen in the photo above) also a noticeable improvement in skin tone and texture.

What to expect with Photorejuvenation Treatments

  • An active scrub or Microdermabrasion will be done prior to applying Levulan.
  • Incubation time is required in a dark room.
  • You are placed under a Blue-U light or I.P.L. (light) following the incubation time.

Levulan is washed off and a sun block is applied to the area before leaving the clinic.

Post-treatment
  • You should stay out of bright light and sunlight for 24 hours.
  • You will be given advice about topical's we recommend to apply in the days following the procedure.
  • The skin will turn various shades of pink to red with some mild swelling possibly over 3-7 days following treatment.
  • Some mild crusting may develop and then slough off around day 3.
  • Approximately 5-10% of patients will have some degree of redness for longer than a week (which can be covered with Jane Iredale makeup or other non-oil based natural mineral products).

BLU-U
The latest treatments are available at Laser Derm.  We offer an acne device called Blu-U that utilizes blue light which selectively activates photosensitizers within the P.acnes bacteria that cause acne.  This creates a toxic bactericidal environment in the sebaceous gland that inhibits the obstruction of the sebaceous follicle with the resulting formation of acne lesions. This treatment is particularly effective for cystic and oily skin.

The Blu-U is completely painless, and involves a short treatment time of only 30 minutes.  The patient sits in the light booth and exposes the face chest or back at 7 - 10 day intervals in a treatment series This is a great treatment by itself, or in combination with other therapies for acne.

Call today for your complimentary consultation with us to see if this therapy seems right for you or for your children.  It is especially great for kids because the procedure is painless and simple. The procedure is safe for all age groups and pregnant women. In some cases, insurance will cover this procedure, so please ask our staff for a letter (included with your receipt) for your insurance carrier if needed.
