The dangers of laser hair removal from unskilled laser technicians is becoming more acknowledged and gaining more media coverage all the time. More people are getting seriously burned by lasers operated by unskilled or undertrained technicians with the ever-growing number of laser clinics opening up across the country. It is important to research and ask questions regarding the training of technicians and of the equipment being used before getting treatment. A technician’s knowledge of skin-types and how they react to different laser settings can greatly reduce the risk of serious burns during treatments. At Laser Derm a skin test (in an inconspicuous area) is performed 24 to 48 hours before treatment. This adds another measure of safety to reduce risk for patients undergoing laser treatment. I decided to have laser hair removal done on my back. I first came to Laser Derm for a few treatments and then decided to shop around for the lowest price to save money. I found a lower priced clinic in Red Deer and went to have the treatments done there. The treatments were terribly painful and as you can see on the picture (below) my back was burned and I now have scars. I soon realized the importance of doing some research to find out more about the Laser Technician’s credentials and how technically new or outdated the laser equipment is. | How does the laser work? | ||
| The Palomar Hair Removal Laser emits pulses of concentrated intense controlled beams of light into the hair follicles. The light is absorbed by the pigment in the follicles and converted to heat. The heat then loosens the hair and disables the cells for growing new hair. | ||
| How is pulsed light different from other laser systems? | ||
| Pulsed light systems and lasers are very similar, but pulsed light uses a much larger treatment window than most lasers. This spreads light over a wider area of skin and allows faster coverage of the skin and quicker treatments as a result. | ||
| What body areas can I get treated with laser hair removal? | ||
| All areas except around the eyes. The upper lip, face, neck, underarms, bikini line, legs, chest and back can all be treated. | ||

| There are very few restrictions regarding LASER hair removal treatments. Patients should discuss with their physician if LASER hair removal treatments are appropriate for them. | ||
| Are laser hair removal treatments painful? | ||
| Using a chilled water supply running through the LASER hand-piece, down to its tip, in contact with the skin during treatment, your skin is continually cooled. You will feel little heat from the LASER pulses and as a result, very little discomfort. | ||
| How do laser hair removal treatments work? | ||
| Your Laser Derm and Wellness Centre certified professional will move the hand-piece over your skin, pulsing as it covers the target area. Each pulse will send a beam of light through your skin. A flashing light, an audible tone, and a mild sensation on the skin will tell you when the handpiece is being pulsed. Immediately after treatment, you can expect a mild sensation, possibly accompanied by some minor swelling. This usually lasts 2-24 hours, and can be soothed with cold gel or ice packs. The treated hair will continue to appear for 7-30 days post-treatment. This is not new hair growth, but the treated hairs being expelled from the skin. At any given time, some of your hair is not in a phase of active growth. Therefore you will need more than one treatment to affect the growth of all your unwanted hair. Typically, several treatments will be necessary to achieve permanent hair reduction. |
